Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera
BARNES Barcelona & Costa Brava presents a selection of properties for sale in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera (Barcelona) - BARNES Barcelona & Costa Brava - Properties for sale in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera - Properties for sale in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la RiberaA neighbourhood with great personality
The neighbourhood of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, which many simply call El Born, occupies the eastern part of the old town of Barcelona, between Via Laietana, Ciutadella Park and the Port Vell. It is one of the city’s most characterful neighbourhoods: medieval streets, Gothic palaces, design studios, galleries and a very varied food scene.
Its streets are home to some of Barcelona’s great monuments, such as the basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Santa Caterina market with its distinctive colourful roof, and Passeig del Born, which leads to the old market hall, now a cultural centre.
The three areas of the neighbourhood
- Sant Pere: to the north, around the Palau de la Música, with quiet streets and residential buildings.
- Santa Caterina: around the market, with a neighbourhood feel and restored buildings.
- La Ribera and El Born: the best-known area, between Santa Maria del Mar, Passeig del Born and Ciutadella Park.
Passeig d’Isabel II and the Port Vell waterfront
Where the neighbourhood meets the sea, Passeig d’Isabel II features some of the city’s most emblematic 19th-century stately buildings, such as the Porxos d’en Xifré, opposite the Port Vell. Several of the homes presented by BARNES are in historic buildings in this area, restored to preserve their high ceilings, balconies and original character.
Apartments and penthouses for sale
The BARNES selection in the neighbourhood includes different property types:
- Apartments in stately buildings: one- to four-bedroom homes in historic buildings, with high ceilings and original features.
- Penthouses with terraces: in El Born and near Ciutadella Park, some with two terraces, one of the most sought-after property types in the centre. See also the luxury penthouses in Barcelona.
- Large residences: occasionally, spacious homes combining classic architecture with contemporary design.
What to consider when buying in El Born
- The building: its condition, the quality of the restoration and whether there is a lift.
- Light and views: upper floors and homes overlooking Passeig d’Isabel II, Ciutadella Park or squares get more light.
- Noise: El Born is a lively neighbourhood; the residential streets of Sant Pere and homes facing inner courtyards are quieter.
- Outdoor space: a terrace or large balcony makes a real difference in value in the old town.
Neighbourhood life
Ciutadella Park, one of the city’s great parks, and the nearby Barceloneta beach let you combine city-centre living with green spaces and the seafront. Local shops, markets and the neighbourhood’s cultural offer lead many to choose it as a main residence, and its location also makes it a common choice as a city home for those who live abroad for part of the year.
Neighbouring areas
On the other side of Via Laietana is the Gothic Quarter, with a similar atmosphere and apartments in restored historic buildings. If you prefer the Eixample, see the properties in the Dreta de l’Eixample.

Buildings with history
Many of the neighbourhood’s buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries and have been restored for modern living, preserving their high ceilings, beams, original floors and balconied façades. These restorations offer spacious, bright homes in a historic setting, with new installations and often a lift. In the stately buildings of Passeig d’Isabel II, floors with views of the Port Vell are among the most prized.
